At exactly 16 weeks of pregnancy, I was diagnosed with twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a rare twin syndrome that is very serious and very scary. Flights to the northeast to celebrate Christmas with family were canceled, doctors were called, specialists were consulted, and not least of all, tears were shed. Mops and Pops flew to Austin 2 days after we got the diagnosis, and the next day, the Shoemakers & the Dalys headed to Houston to see a specialist. A month of major medical education about TTTS ensued, during which there were the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. It's not even possible for me to summarize it in words here. Suffice it to say, we became parents making life and death decisions about our precious babies much earlier than we ever expected to.
For some great medical info on TTTS shared by my amazing Houston doctor, Dr. Ken Moise, go to Texas Children's Fetal Care Center (Parents: click on those red words to open the page). There's a great video summarizing the syndrome, it's symptoms and some treatments. I'll warn you, though, it might be a little hard to watch - it's a pretty serious pregnancy complication.
