Some days go down in the books.
Yesterday started off all well and good. In fact, I awoke to 7,183 Facebook messages because, as it turns out, it was the 35th anniversary of my birth. Now I can run for president. Watch out, world!
Everything stayed on an even keel until about 4:00pm when the world went somewhat pear shaped. Daycare called to say Em fell and her tooth was loose. "Loose" actually looked a lot more like "broken in half and falling out". However, she seemed in good spirits and didn't have much pain, etc. The moms should probably have been medicated.
We arrived home to 40 people in our driveway and on our lawn. I'm prone to exaggeration, but it was actually 40+ people. Our neighbor left town and lent out her house to some local filmmakers for a movie. I love the arts, but not when they are all up in my business so I CANNOT PARK MY CAR AND DEAL WITH SCREAMING TWINS. Sorry for shouting. We were informed that they'd be there a day. Nothing was signed, there was no mention of 3+ days of shooting, no access to our driveway, people on our lawn, or bright lights streaming into the house at 11pm.
When they told Chris she could not park in the one open spot on the street she went BANANAS. It was kind of awesome. It's good we don't own weapons or someone might have gone castle doctrine on them.
Upon entering the house it was clear that Lucy's episode with food that did not agree with her was not over. I'd spent 45 minutes cleaning up the house after her at 3AM the night before; I should have known better than to let her roam during the day. In our absence she'd relieved herself in one way or another in every room of the house. I briefly felt badly for her distress and then put her in the backyard (baby on hip because we could not put them down anywhere).
Children were placed in the feeding table to corral them. They ate every soft food we had in the house. While I scrambled to find additional items that wouldn't antagonize a tooth, Chris was vigilantly scrubbing dishes. Dish scrubbing is basically the twin-mom equivalent of rocking in a corner cooing. We don't typically have the luxury of not being productive when we are loosing our minds. We then texted two people to cancel appointments for last night that are actually scheduled for today (no idea what day it is people) and attempted to set up emergency dental and vet appointments.
This is one of those days that will be funny in a little while. Of course with some perspective all is well. No one is seriously hurt, teeth grow back for babies, we have insurance, etc., etc. but man(!) was it more than we could take yesterday.
It does make me thankful for a few things. 1) My amazing wife who managed to get me a lovely gift, flowers, and a great cake despite an incredibly busy schedule even before the day got weird. 2) Thai Fresh who let us order and pick up a wonderful dinner when we could not handle making one. 3) My folks who talked me off the ledge, and reminded me that it is perfectly fine to want to talk to (cry to?) your mom when you have a hard day -- even when you are 35.
**UPDATE**
Em's tooth is apparently fine. It turns out babies gums callous over as their teeth push through. The callous eventually comes off and can appear very tooth like. That's all she lost yesterday! She's got some bruising but her teeth are just fine.
Happy Belated Birthday, Leah! Boy, you sure had a doozy that day. Makes my tough days look like a walk in the park. ;-) Glad Em's tooth is OK!
