Feeding Time

Well, the girls have been given the green light for solid foods!  They are 6.5 months and we waited until their pedi appointment last Friday just to make sure they were ready, given that they are actually 5 months adjusted. However, I've known they were ready for a few weeks now.  They've been doing the typical very-interested-in-watching-us-eat routine that most parents see.  They also have been exhibiting another behaviour which I find hilarious - they get very excited to take their medicine. They open up wide, they grab my hand as I bring the dropper near their faces, they are quite serious about taking it in their mouths, and they swallow down every little bit.  It's pretty funny, as it's such a change from a few weeks ago when they didn't like the taste and they discovered that they could push it out of their mouths with their tongues...  It makes me giggle every time because it's so adorable that they actually think it might be food.

Anyway, since we aren't really busy or anything, and buying high chairs seemed so conventional, we decided to make our own.  The idea wasn't ours - we stole it from the interwebs via another twin family, and this very cool website called Ikea Hackers.  It's dedicated to taking basic pieces of Ikea furniture and altering them with a few creative changes.  Apparently a table like this is quite useful for twins - easier to clean, less parts, and a mess contained to one table rather than 2 highchairs.  We'll see...

Our Ikea Hack involved a table bought off Craigslist, a jigsaw, and two plastic drop-in seats ordered from a daycare supply company.  The result?  Our very own feeding / activity / crafts table!  The munchkins will have plenty of room to eat, color, draw, and make a mess!

Starting late one night in the garage...
Seat #1 is finished!  Time to call it a night...
The table is complete!  Em demonstrates.

Those dangling feet just crack us up.

We've moved the table into the dining room and I've been sitting the girls in it to get used to it.  One day I decided to give them their new plastic bowls to play with while sitting there.  This video captures their hilarious antics.  They loved the loud sound that the bowls made as they banged around on the table - well - Char did at least.  As you can see, Em wasn't so sure.

  1. Oh. My. God. I love that! Assume you bought a big enough table that you can just widen the holes as they get bigger?! Absolutely genius.

BTW, I am taking great pride in the fact that most of the time I can recognize which one is Em and which one is Char before reading the caption! ;-)

  2. Perhaps Em just doesn't see the point of flipping the bowl if there's nothing in it to spill!

Leah I am v. impressed that you got your dyke on, late at night, in a dark garage, and did not end the evening with a trip to the emergency room. Brava!
