Well, it was a good long stretch from surgery til now, but it looks like my pregnancy is drawing to a close. My water broke on Monday night around 9pm. Thank goodness I was still in the hospital on bed rest! The doctor's moved me back over to Labor & Delivery (L&D) for constant monitoring of the girls. That makes my 6th hospital room in this 3 week visit!
Oh - point of clarification - people have been asking me why they are letting me break the "golden rule" that you must give birth within 24 hrs of breaking your water due to fear of infection. That is generally true for term or near term babies. With premature rupture of membranes (PROM), which is what I had, they try to keep you pregnant for as long as possible in order to allow the babies to get bigger & healthier. If it's going to be months, they'll put you on a course of antibiotics. Of course, all this presumes a hospital stay with lots of monitoring. Since with me it will be less than a week until I get to 34 weeks, I get to skip the antibiotics. Getting to 34 weeks is a great milestone in their development, and they will be old enough to deliver with high likelihood of good outcomes for their health.
After 36 hours in L&D, it was apparent that still all these contractions had not initiated real labor, even with baby A's amniotic sac leaking fluid! Tough uterus I apparently have! This was great news because it meant not having to have an emergency C section, and giving the girls more time to grow. I got to move back to Antepartum this morning (Wednesday). Such a relief - over here the monitoring is only 2 hours per day, which means I actually get to sleep at night. I'll be here until Saturday morning, at which point we have a C section scheduled for 9am! If I can get my uterus to stay calm enough not to go into real labor in the next few days, the girls will be born on April 23, 2011. It's totally surreal to both Leah and I that this part of the journey is ending and a whole new one is beginning. I guess I feel like every other pregnant woman on the planet who become convinced that "this pregnancy will never end!" :)
We'll update the blog as we can with pictures of us and the girls!
I can't wait to hear about the girls' arrival! I am thinking about all 4 of you every minute. It was a real treat to read through the blog. Tears in my eyes the whole way. I am so thrilled and so proud of both of you. My absolute favorite is the picture of Leah kissing the babies!
