The surgery I had utilized a laser to ablate (kill) the connecting blood vessels between the two babies, so that they couldn't transfer blood unevenly between them anymore. Since the girls are basically just floating around in amniotic fluid, my doctor had to make sure he could see what he was ablating - so they also inserted a fiberoptic camera along with the laser. Little did we realize until later, a camera means pictures! They took a few shots while they were in there... amazing.
At this point in development (20 weeks), a baby's skin is translucent and all it's own veins and arteries show through. These pictures are all of "recipient" baby, because they only went inside her amniotic sac - they don't touch the other sac. Pretty crazy, huh?!?
