The Garden

Well, as most of you know, the vegetable garden became sort of an obsession of mine last winter, spring, and summer.  I think it comes from being used to having all sorts of "projects" at work, and not having any at home was driving me bonkers... the garden became the focus of all that energy.

And it's time to start all over again!  As I plan my 2015 garden, I'm looking back on last year's bounty, and I have to say, I'm quite pleased.  I was diligent about weighing each produce harvest (ever the scientist, collecting data...), and in sum, it's pretty cool to think I grew all that food.

My 2014 veggie garden, by the numbers...
~ 17 lbs of cucumbers, 15 lbs of squash, 63 lbs of tomatoes, 6 lbs of carrots, 5 lbs of lettuce, 13 jars of pesto from basil, 14 lbs of eggplant, 2 lbs peppers, 4 lbs beans, 2 lbs arugula, 1 lb collards, and 1 lb kale.

If you add up what you'd pay for those things from my local Whole Foods, it comes to ~ $436 of veggies!  Then again, I did spend around $750 to get it all set up... :)

A lot of the costs won't be necessary this year (the beds, the soil, my wheelbarrow, etc), so hopefully this year we'll go from being in the red to in the black!
