The pitter patter of little feet

Let's be real, if any parents are reading this they know damn well that small children sound like a herd of elephants.  Our children probably weigh 30 pounds a piece* and yet them running from their room to ours makes the earth shake.

We've gotten to know that sound quite well since we introduced the "big girl beds."  Freedom of movement is a dangerous thing to authorize in the toddler set.  They take advantage of things -- any things -- for a living.  It is like their job.

That said, we've done some hard training.  Don't worry, they are still plenty sassy.  There is no spirit breaking authorized on Randlett Park.  We just try to keep the running around to a minimum during sleeping hours.

Enter the bunny clock, which depicts a sleeping or waking rabbit depending on the hour.  The bunny clock says it is day time?  Have at it kiddos!  That bunny is sleeping and you better stay in your beds!

This morning Char and Mommy were already downstairs and I was pretending to get a last few minutes of sleep.  Then I hear the thud, thud, thud across the floor.  Then there was nothing... except for some heavy breathing.  It is clear Em is about 6 inches from my face staring at the bed.  This goes on for like 2 minutes with me thinking she is gonna crack any minute and yelp or smack my face or something, but there is nothing.  Just a toddler starring at her mama pretending to be asleep.

I slowly open one eye and the giggling ensues.  First Em, then me.  She grabs my face and kisses me and then throws herself on the bed.  She snuggles into the perfect position and puts both arms around my head and chest.

"I love you so so much, Mama."

You too, sweetheart, you too. And with a wake-up call like that I thank you for giving me the gift of what can only turn into an amazing day.

*Since I originally authored this the girls have discovered the scale. We weighed ourselves for a good 20 minutes yesterday.  They come in at around 28 pounds, give or take some fidgeting.
